![]() The combat element of crossbows, ie the already nocked element, if you're in people's face as a combat archer then you dont need to hold your bow drawn (since the enemy will be close enough to hit without a full draw), also everytime you're hit I find you sway more with a crossbow rather than a bow which leads you to miss more shots (I have literally fired at a target so close I can hardly see behind them and missed due to sway). Although as a caveat to this I also play with the arcane archer CC add on and so bows also get elemental arrows (although I've not taken this into account when comparing the 2 weapons due to it being a "mod"). The same with exploding bolts of x, the damage increase is useless if you're already going to deal enough damage to stealth kill the opponent. If the target has 100 health but with perks, enchants etc you're pumping out 5 times that amount then the "benefit" of armour piercing is no longer a benefit. Whilst no bows have an innate ignore armour function, the point I was making is at some point its redundant. However when considering the movement involved in range combat, crossbows stay loaded and allow the user to strafe and duck and shoot with much greater mobility, which is a huge advantage in higher levels of difficulty. So yes, when standing in one spot and pumping out as many arrows as possible, the crossbows have a marginally slower output than regular bows and notably slower output than Zephyr. A similar comp could be the special elven arrows you get from Serana, but I still consider those less versatile and useful than the exploding arrows.Īdditionally, I think your thoughts on the crossbow reload aren’t considering the limited mobility involved in drawing and holding the draw: you move slower when the bow is drawn. I could be mistaken but I don’t know if any arrows that do this. You can unlock exploding fire/frost/shock steel and dwarven bolts. I can’t think of any regular bows which can do this.Īlso worth noting is the specialty arrows you can make with crossbows. The regular crossbow is less powerful than a lot of bows, sure, however the enhanced crossbow and enhanced dwarven crossbows both ignore 50% of the targets armor. I disagree completely with your assessment of the crossbow’s effectiveness. Sword in 1 hand and crossbow in the other. Keep it loud so a bow will always be the better stealth option but make the crossbow the combat option, a non magicka version of a spell sword. So the crossbow just seems sub par to the bow in every category which got me thinking, what if the crossbow was 1 handed? Especially the dwarven crossbow since it's attached to Dwarven spheres and so in game is already quite small. It's not effective as a combat archer weapon either due to it's slow reload, easily surpassed by a weapon like zephyr. Although almost every bow can easily hit high enough stealth damage to kill most creatures in 1 or 2 hits, it's also louder than the bow and so isnt great to take out multiple enemies. Most ranged weapons are just used by stealth archers, which would initially seem like a great fit for the crossbow extra damage. I love the aesthetics of the crossbow in the game bit does anyone think the crossbow could've done with something a bit more to help its functionality?
